Baltimore Ravens
When you go out to Ravens training camp in Westminster, one of the things that you notice is that there is an army of people surrounding Kyle Boller. The one around him the most is the person that should be around him, Jim Fassel. I began advocating for Fassell to come to Baltimore once the Giants began to quit like dogs on him last season. Many didn't think that it was possible but thank goodness it worked out. Those who know football know that Fassell has been called the best QB coach of the last generation aside from Bill Walsh. He was the man who brought out the talent in a young, raw John Elway in addition to guys like Kerry Collins, Boomer Esiason and Kent Graham. Under Fassel's guidance, Broncos quarterback John Elway enjoyed his finest season as a pro in 1993, earning honors that included the AFC Player-of-the-Year and Most Valuable Player. Elway led the AFC in all six major passing categories. The Broncos offense ranked third in the AFC and fifth in the NFL and scored 373 points to rank first in the conference and third in the league. In 1996 with the Cardinals, Fassel tutored Kent Graham into a solid player and helped rejuvenate veteran Boomer Esiason.

The Cardinals finished sixth in passing offense in 1996. Anyone can teach John Elway but I've got to respect a guy that can get the most out of Kent Graham. We've seen how he turned Kerry Collins from a thrower to a passer in addition to getting into the guy's head and pointing out that the booze will sack him harder than Ray Lewis would. When you have that type of coaching talent, you should be able to come in and handle the job of QB guru to young guys like Boller and Harris and a sensitive veteran like Kordell Stewart. When you watch practice, what you see is a constant rotation of up to four people in Boller's ear. If it isn't Fassel, its WR coach David Shaw who for whatever reason is still listed as QB coach. Believe me, Shaw has enough work to do with the WR's than to be coming over whispering to the QB's. Has anyone thought that one of the problems with the wide receivers on the Ravens is the fact that they haven't had decent coaching since Mike Sheppard left? Why do you think that the Ravens went so hard after former Cardinals coach Jerry Sullivan? They even thought that the deal was done only to see him move to Miami and bring the blue-eyed monster David Boston to the Dolphins. Shaw has more than enough work to do coaching a young and inexperienced group of receivers like Hymes, Darling, Moore Kelly and Johnson in addition to getting a full season of production out of Travis Taylor and Kevin Johnson. He doesn't need to come over with the QB's especially if Fassel is there. Click to Buy Ravens tickets.
Matt Cavanaugh has put in time with the QB's as well. While he is the Offensive Coordinator and should have some input, there seems to be too much walking on egg shells around the Ravens complex. No one wants to step on someone's toes and while I admire that in some respects, we all realize that there is a serous, serious problem with he Ravens passing game that needs to be addressed NOW! We shouldn't be so worried about how someone's feelings may be hurt by having a mind like Fassel's interject his opinions and coach the freakin' quarterbacks by himself. It's obvious to all Ravens fans that the job hasn't been done as of yet and we need to get someone in there who knows what he is doing. If the job had been done by the previous coaches, Fassel wouldn't be here! Please understand when I say that I like Matt Cavanaugh and I feel that he has taken many bullets for Coach Billick. The bottom line is that Fassel was brought in for a reason and while we have him we need to draw as much out of him as possible without worrying about protocol and feelings. Shaw, stay with the receivers and be thankful that you are still employed. Matt, coordinate the entire offense and use this walking encyclopedia as much as you can. Coach Billick, put aside ego and let the guy work with the prodigy. You bringing him in was an admission to everyone that something is wrong with ugh and Billick. He might start looking like the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, trying to remember all of the different advice he gets on standing correctly, pointing his toes a certain way, holding his arm this way or that, snapping his wrist this way or that way in addition to remembering his checks and hot routes once he finally realizes that he is in the right position to throw.
If Fassel can get Boller in a better position, both mentally and physically to play the game, there is no telling what this team could do. By just moving into the top 20, just getting to 20 alone would push the Ravens, if injury free, into the preeminent team position in the NFL. Everyone looks at the Patriots as the team to beat, followed by the Colts. Do you think either of those teams could move the ball on a Ravens defense another year experienced? Those teams do not have the defense of the Ravens. Hell Carolina put up 29 on the Patriots last year and their offense wasn't much better than ours last year. Kerry Collins had by his standards a bad year last year with 3,110 yards passing, 13 TDS/16 INTs, and a rating of 70.7. I'll put it to you here and now if Boller put up those numbers we would win the Super Bowl if everyone else did their jobs. Jamal would probably run for just 1,700 yards but the field would be so much more wide open and I think he would catch more passes. It's hard enough tackling Jamal at the line of scrimmage; don't let him have some space to work in. Remember the 77 yard TD pass he caught in 2002 against New Orleans? He caught 46 balls that year. He could catch 50 this season, save some pounding and put a hurting on DB's out in space. We all got orgasmic when we heard that the Ravens were using motion! When is the last time we used motion? In 1996/97 when we could throw the ball a little bit with Vinny, Michael and Derrick, not to mention JLew in the slot. Just running a little motion allows you to see whether or not you are running against man or zone in addition to just giving the defense something to think about at the line of scrimmage. Fassel's influence is being felt in area. Sometimes you feel like the Ravens think that they should be ashamed of themselves for bringing Fassel in. They should be commended for recognizing that they are on the verge of something great and are trying to take advantage of it. The Giants were 11th in passing last year without Shockey and the starting receivers being Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer, not Randy Moss and Tory Holt. To be quite honest, this is the best collection of receivers Billick has had her and that is a little scary to think of. While they aren't the '98 Vikings, they aren't the 2003 Ravens or Eagles either. Kevin Johnson will do nothing else if not catch the football. This time last year we already knew that the Marcus Robinson experiment was a bust. He couldn't catch anything in practice and it followed him to the field except for three games in November (sounds like a movie).
